Giving your dog a Dog Halloween Costume of one of your favourite Superman / BatMan or other Super Hero’s will not only provide you with amazing memories and photo’s, it might also also make him more relaxed during thunderstorms. A product called StormDefender has been released in the US which claims to do exactly that. In this post I will explain some of the research behind it and show you how to modify a Pet Halloween costume to accomplish a similar result. I wouldn’t have believed it if there wasn’t some sound scientific facts behind it!

“Research shows that dogs sense the static charge buildup before a thunderstorm. This same charge, if it gets big enough, produces lightning. Knowing that, it makes sense for dogs to be afraid and seek shelter. It is an “early warning” system for lightning.”

“Dogs naturally try to escape the static charge by moving toward items that are electrically grounded. Many thunderstorm-phobic dogs seek shelter in the basement, around the toilet, shower, tub or near pipes. They also may try to hide or get underneath something. Favorite spots are often the bathtub (if made of porcelain coated cast iron) or the car. When properly used, the Storm Defender cape will reduce the dog’s anxiety. The cape has a special metallic lining that discharges a dog’s fur and shields him from the static charge buildup reducing his sensitivity to the charge. The dog gets relief, and after a few storms begins to learn that the secondary triggers like rain, wind, thunder, barometric pressure and smells are no longer to be feared. With the cape on, the dog feels as though he has found a safe place.” – www.stormdefender.com

This is a really cool Idea, especially if you like to see your dog “flying” down the road as your favourite Super Hero.

Step 2: Get yourself 4Disposable ESD Strap(only $1 or so each, or ask your IT department at work) ESD straps (or Electrical Discharge Straps) are used by computer technicians to ground themselves when working on the insides of your computer, to prevent them from damaging your computer’s components when touching them. (like when replacing or upgrading a PC’s Memory) Nowadays you get really cheap disposable straps (You’re IT Department most probably have a few lying around in their server room…)

Step 3: Line the Cape with the ESD straps

You can easily do this by attaching the ESD straps to each other with the conveniently pull off sticky ends of the straps.
